Countertop basins are becoming more popular due to their minimalist design and practicality.
You can choose from a wide range of sizes and styles to suit your bathroom's style. They can be used in conjunction with any type of tap or vanity unit and are generally the easiest to install.
Although it's obvious why you would want a countertop basin for your bathroom, what do you need to know before you buy one? This guide will help you understand everything. Let's begin with the basics.
What is a Countertop Basin and how does it work?
A countertop basin simply means a basin that is mounted to a flat surface. The surface could be a shelf for a basin, a table, or even a set of drawers. They will be mounted on top of a bathroom vanity unit, which could again be wall-mounted or freestanding.
Countertop basins look similar to large bowls but can be made in many sizes and shapes. Countertop basins do not need to be connected to the wall at their back.
The Benefits
Countertop basins offer more space. They can be placed on top of the counter so they fit in the best position for your plumbing.
Freestanding basins can only contain the washbowl, with no tap hole or back ledge. This design offers more water capacity and allows for more tap placement options. You can place the tap anywhere you like, including behind or to the side of the basin.
A counter-mounted, freestanding basin has another advantage: the glazing. Some basins are glazed from the bottom up. This is a great option if the basin is to be placed in front of a mirror, as nobody wants to see a grey edge.
If you are interested in a particular feature, it is worth checking with your supplier.
They can also be sat on top of the counter, making them more accessible and comfortable than other types of basins.
What are the Different Styles of Countertop Basins?
There are many sizes and shapes available for countertop basins. It doesn't have to be a specific size or shape in order to mount on top of a surface.
You'll find the right look for you, whether you want a contemporary, luxurious hotel atmosphere or something more traditional. These are some of the most popular options.
Rectangle Countertop Basin
Rectangular countertop basins look great and don't cost a lot.
Some rectangular basins can be used in the narrowest rooms, such as the one we most love which is only 25mm deep. The tap, just like freestanding basins can be placed to the left or right of a basin or on the wall. This makes it a versatile solution.
Square Countertop Basin
Square basins look great with angular-looking taps and accessories. This is a great way to save space or place smaller vanity units on top but still maintain your style.
Non-Ceramic Basins
You don't have to use ceramic for countertop bathroom basins. There are many options now. These are just a few more ideas...
Basins of Natural Stone
A natural limestone basin is unique because each one is made from natural stone. Each basin also has individual sediment markings that were created millions of years ago. This is a truly unique basin.
Glass basins
Glass basins are a unique option that will make your bathroom stand out. They come in a variety of colours, including black and frosted.
Stone Resin Basins
The stone resin basins are made from an acrylic and mineral bond. They come in pure white colour. These sinks are easy to clean and durable. They have a matte finish and are silky smooth.

Do I have to install a countertop basin myself?
Although it is not difficult to install a countertop basin, you will need basic DIY skills. It will be necessary to drill a hole in the counter to drain the water and to install the plumbing.
A professional is usually a better choice if you are not confident or inclined to do it yourself. This will often guarantee a more beautiful finish.
How can I fix the basin to the countertop?
We are often asked how the basin stays in place on the work surface. The answer is the waste plug
The image below shows that the waste has a long shaft that fits through the basin, then the counter. It is then secured under the counter using the large fixing nuts to keep the basin in place.
Once the silicone has been secured, you can apply it all around the basin's edge to stop water from seeping under the basin or sitting stagnant on top.
Where can I mount the Countertop Basin?
Countertop basins can be mounted on any flat surface provided that waste holes are drilled. This can be done by you or a professional. The height of the basin and the entire unit can add to its height, which could make it more difficult to use. The basin should be between 75-90cm tall when it is fully constructed and installed.
A vanity unit that includes a basin will be purpose-built and delivered to you in a pre-assembled state will make your bathroom look more professional, stylish, and functional. You can also choose a vanity cabinet by itself and add your choice of the basin.
You should not use drawers if you are using something that was not originally intended to have a sink on it. However, they can be decorative on the front. The back must have a plumbing opening.
What taps can I fit with a Countertop Basin and what taps can I use?
There is no need to choose a specific tap or fitting for your countertop basin. Any style, shape, and design that you can imagine (or match to your bathrooms) will work.
Keep in mind the tap on/off handles. The tap should be able to reach the bottom of the basin if it is at the back. It will be difficult and frustrating to turn the tap on or off if they are located at the bottom.
Some basins have a tap hole that allows you to install your mixer tap. Others will need to be fitted through the vanity unit. Taller taps will work well here.
A wall tap can be installed above the basin to save space. It will also look great.
